SINK or SELL!

I have to sell at least one of my five feature films! In the past I've written that FUGUE filmmakers make films for the passion of the craft, and whether people like them or not is irrelevant! I stand corrected. We FUGUE filmmakers can't live on cat food!" So, make your films as strong as possible with the minuscule budget we have to work with, as this will increase the chance of a distribution deal! FUGUE filmmakers from this day forward must also be SAVY businessman and not depend on anybody but themselves for financial matters! This principal is HUGE! Now go sell your FILMS!!! love, jd

PPB....."Post-project-blues"

FUGUE Filmmakers start and finish their films no matter what! Then what? Move on to the next one, of coarse. Fugue Filmmakers, like I, the creator of the concept, have at least two completed scripts by the end of completion of a project. Even while you are shooting, you are writing! Always have two screenplays waiting in the wings or at least one completed! Yadi, yadi, yada! "Why, FUGUE film boy, are you spewing these words of wisdom," you may ask? Well the reality is we make films, and when we are not making films, we are "Blue, Sad, depressed!" At least, I am! So, I write to remind myself the love of the craft is a vast ocean ideas and stories still yet to be told through the gift of cinema. However, don't forget that you must also SELL your projects! That is not our priority though! We live for Cinema of the soul and if nobdy else wants to see our cinematic souls, "You Lose!" ....love, jd

FEELINGS, nothing more than Feelings...

Okay, so my last post was a pity party. Like my friend said, "It's Lent, get off the Cross, we're gonna need the wood!" Sometimes when one feels SO LOW it's good to have a shoulder to lean on! So filmmaker's, SOLO in terms of relationships, may not always be the best way! The Indie/fugue filmmaking process can really take it's toll on you psychologically, so it would be wise to not isolate when times get rough, and they will! As I've blogged before, and I must take action on this principle, don't take yourself, or the craft, so seriously!!! Have a good cry then move on! Yes, "Cry me a river!" I have, and it was more like an ocean! heehee.....Now, wipe those tears off, and go finish your film, WATER WORLD! love, jd

SOLO or Sow Low

Filmmakers, BEWARE! In my opinion, the only way to really get all the juice from your creative soul is to go SOLO! This pertains not only to film, but in music, relationships, etc! I'm not suggesting, isolating, or withdrawing from society; but, letting others into your "Gut," is a like a parasite sucking you dry and making you feel SO-LOW! People will disappoint you, and at this stage in the game it is wise to minimize the pain! In short, SAVE YOUR FACE! It's the only one you've got! love, jd
P.S. The photo is from "On Location," in East L.A. for the filming of my last film, THE 11th STATION.

THE LONGEST 1/2 YARD

In slow motion dramatic fashion, I am evading snarling linebackers wanting to annihilate me with their brute strength as I weave in and out of blood thirsty tacklers, and I come within half a yard of the goal line! In other words, I'm close to finishing this film. {{{{{{{YIKES!}}}}} I just evaded a giant of a defensive end! Enough of this blog, back to the editing room!!! love, jd
